FSU Softball Records A Shutout For Season's First Win

The combination of productive pitching and hitting proved lethal as the Ferris State University softball team earned its first victory of the 2011 season with a 6-0 win over University of the Sciences (Pa.) this Sunday (March 6) afternoon at the Florida Rebel Spring Games Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Bulldogs, who are presently 1-2 overall this season, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of third inning by scoring an unearned run on a USP error.  Freshman pitcher Amy Dunleavy (Canton), who would toss a two-hitter in the complete-game victory, lead off the stanza with a double to right field.  A sacrifice moved Dunleavy over to third base and she would score on a  two-out error by USP center fielder Erin Summers following senior right fielder Colleen Roney's (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South) outfield fly.  

Ferris State would put five more runs up on the scoreboard in the fifth inning on four base hits coupled with two Devils' errors.  Sophomore center fielder Morgan Kramerich (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) drove home the first run on a RBI single and the Bulldogs quickly tallied two more scores both as a result of USP errors.  Junior third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) singled in Ferris State's fifth run of the game on a hit to right center field with two outs and sophomore second baseman Lainee Clay (Wheelersburg, Ohio) followed with a two-RBI base hit through the left side of the Devils' infield for the final two runs. 

Amy Dunleavy (1-1) recorded the victory and helped her cause with a two-of-three hitting performance to go with two runs scored.  Morgan Kramerich and Makenzi Peterson also produced two-hit game efforts for Ferris State, which stranded six runners on base while USP left two runners on the basepaths.

University of the Sciences' pitcher Courtney Spina (0-1) allowed eight hits and six runs while striking out one in six innings of work inside the circle.

Notes: Morgan Kramerich posted her team-leading second multi-hit game this season . . . Colleen Roney and Morgan Kramerich both hit safely in extending their current hitting string to three games . . . The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 versus University of the Sciences in their all-time series.
