FSU Falls In Nine Innings At Florida Tourney

Big Rapids, Mich. - Minnesota State scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to hand the Ferris State softball team its first loss of the 2012 campaign on Saturday (March 3) afternoon in a 5-2 setback at the Florida Rebel Spring Games Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.

The contest went into extra innings at the Osceola Sports Complex after both teams managed only a single run apiece thru the seven innings.

Minnesota State took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule in the ninth to register the victory.  After a runner was placed on second to start the inning, Lindsay Erickson doubled to score a run and was then brought in on a two-run homer by Chelsea Erickson to account for the three runs.

Ferris State had a final chance in the bottom of the ninth, but the Bulldogs could not muster any offense.

The Bulldogs scored first to grab the early advantage in the bottom of the third inning when senior third baseman Makenzi Peterson doubled in the first run of the contest.

However, Minnesota State responded in the top of the fourth with an unearned run following a Bulldog error.

Both teams managed to score once in the eighth inning after a runner for each was placed on second.  Following Minnesota State's score, Peterson flied out to right field on a sacrifice hit to produce FSU's second run of the game.

Peterson led the Bulldogs at the plate for the second-straight game as she posted two hits and drove in two runs.  Shortstop Michelle Tononi also had a hit and scored twice for the Bulldogs.

Lindsay Erickson and Chelsea Erickson combined for three of Minnesota State's five hits in the outing and drove in all five runs.

Bulldog junior pitcher Dana Bowler hurled all nine innings and allowed five runs on five hits with two errors.  She struck out six and walked only one.

Courtney McKelvogue picked up the win in the circle for Minnesota State by striking out eight and walking three in nine innings.

Ferris State returns to action again on Sunday (March 4) in the Florida Rebel Spring Games as the Bulldogs face Southwest Minnesota State at 1 p.m. (ET) followed by a contest versus C.W. Post (N.Y.) at 3 p.m. (ET).
