Ninth-Inning Run Sinks Bulldogs In Friday Game

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team went to extra innings, but couldn't come out with the win as the Bulldogs fell 6-5 in nine innigs to St. Cloud State in Friday's (March 9) first contest of the day at the Florida Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

FSU fell behind 3-0 after three innings before using a four-run fourth to take a 4-3 edge.  The Bulldogs increased the edge to 5-3 after six innings.  However, St. Cloud State struck twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up and force the extra play.

Neither team was able to put a run on the board in the eighth and Ferris State was held scoreless in the ninth.  Then, in the bottom of the frame, St. Cloud State's Megan Lehnen signled in the game-winning run with one out to account for the Huskies' victory.

FSU was outhit 14-7 for the contest in falling to 5-6 overall this campaign.

Offensively, FSU was paced by catcher Liz Hamming, who tallied three hits and had five RBI's in the setback for the Bulldogs.  She twice doubled and also homered in the game.  Amy Dunleavy added two hits as well.

St. Cloud State's Jackie Dooley, Mikayla Hogan and Lehnen all had three hits each with Kelly Olson and Lehnen driving in two runs each.

Dunleavy pitched six innings for the Bulldogs and allowed five runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts.  Meanwhile, Emily Carlson threw in relief for the final two and one-third innings and gave up only three hits and a single run while walking two and striking out one in the game.

The Bulldogs were slated to face California (Pa.) in Friday's second game of the day at the Florida Rebel Spring Games.
