Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State softball team split a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader at home on Saturday (April 14) against the Ohio Dominican Panthers.
FSU tallied a 7-0 triumph in the opening game of the league twinbill, but the Panthers responded with an 8-6 win in game two.
In the opener, the Bulldogs led 2-0 after four innings before striking for three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Overall, Ferris State held a 10-3 advantage in hits during the first game.
Junior pitcher Dana Bowler was victorious in the circle for he Bulldogs with seven strikeouts and four walks over seven innings. She improved to 10-8 overall this season with the win.
Offensively, senior Makenzi Peterson notched two doubles while Morgan Kramerich and Lainee Clay also doubled for the Bulldogs. Senior first baseman Chelsea Morris belted her fourth homer of the campaign and added a double in the win to account for four RBI's. Peterson notched three hits and scored three runs in game one.
Ohio Dominican had a much better showing in game two as the Panthers pounded out 13 hits in an 8-6 win.
ODU opened up a 8-1 advantage after five innings of the second game, but FSU responded with five runs in the sixth to trim the margin to two scores. FSU could get no closer though as the Panthers picked up the split.
Amy Dunleavy pitched the initial three innings for FSU and struck out two batters while allowing seven hits and four runs. Emily Carlson then pitched one and two-thirds innings with a single strikeout before Cara DeLange finished the game by allowing no runs in the final one and one-third frames.
Clay homered for the Bulldogs in game two as did Liz Hamming. Meanwhile, Peterson added her eighth double of the year.
The game two winner in the circle for Ohio Dominican was Rachel Stanzel, who tossed six innings to improve to 12-9 on the year. She had two strikeouts and one walk.
Ferris State is currently 21-19 overall and 12-10 in the GLIAC with the split while Ohio Dominican is now 19-23 overall along with 13-9 in league play.
FSU hosts Ashland on Sunday, April 15, in a league doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
