Morris Named To Academic All-District Team

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University softball senior first baseman Chelsea Morris (Jenison) has been named to the 2012 Capital One Division II Academic All-District 4 First Team.

The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.  The teams are nominated and chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

As a first-team all-district honoree, Morris is now eligible to receive Academic All-Americaaccolades, which will be announced later this month.

The 5-9 Morris led the Bulldog softball team to a 31-24 overall mark during the 2012 campaign and a runner-up finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Postseason Tournament.  The Bulldogs closed the year by winning 15 of their final 21 contests, including 10 of the last 13 outings.

A 2012 GLIAC Honorable Mention choice, Morris previously was named the 2011 GLIAC Player of the Year and was a Daktronics All-Midwest Region First Team honoree as a junior.  She concluded her career ranked among the school's all-time leaders in home runs, RBI's, batting average and doubles.

Morris started all 55 games in 2012 and tallied a team second-best 31 RBI's.  She posted 51 hits with a .295 batting average in 173 at-bats.  Additionally, she recorded nine doubles and six home runs this campaign with 414 putouts in the field.

The 2011 GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient had 13 multiple-hit contests this season.  In her junior campaign, Morris tallied a team-leading 51 hits while batting .331 in claiming GLIAC First Team recognition.

Overall, Morris was among six GLIAC student-athletes to earn Academic All-District First Team status this year. The District 4 team includes schools from the GLIAC and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams program in 2011.
