Ferris State Notches Yet Another Split In Florida During Friday Softball Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the fifth time in as many days of action in Florida, the Ferris State University softball squad posted a least one win on the day as the Bulldogs earned a non-league split on Friday (March 10) at The Spring Games in Clermont.

The Bulldogs fell to Pitt-Johnstown 6-3 in the opener on Friday afternoon, but came back to top regional foe Rockhurst (Mo.) by a 3-2 count in evening play to earn their fourth split to go with a single sweep in the Sunshine State.

Overall, Ferris State has now won six of 10 outings in Florida on its annual spring break trip with only two games left to play.

In the opener, FSU jumped out to a 2-1 lead over Pitt-Johnstown following the first inning of play, but gave up five runs in the fourth and could manage only a single additional run in the seventh in the setback depsite owning a 12-2 margin in total hits.

Both Sam Bates and Bailey Darwin had three hits apiece in the opener with Bates notching a homer along with a double. She also drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.

Abby Highway hurled the entire six innings in game one for Ferris State with six runs allowed on two hits to go with eight strikeouts.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two before Rockhurst responded with two runs in the third. However, FSU plated two more runs in the seventh to walk off with the win while owning an 8-3 edge in total hits.

Bates along with Sarah Meredith and Kayla Chamberlain all posted two hits apiece with Chamberlain's triple at the end of the contest giving FSU the triumph. She also had two RBI's while Bates had one in the victory.

In the circle, Bates tossed the nightcap and allowed only two runs on three hits in seven innings of work.

Ferris State wraps up its trip to Florida on Monday (March 13) as the Bulldogs play their final two outings at The Spring Games against Post and Illinois-Springfield starting at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (ET), respectively.
