Ferris State Garners Split On Final Day Of Spring Trip To Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team concluded its annual spring break trip to Florida with a split on Monday (March 13) as the Bulldogs wrapped up action at The Spring Games in Clermont.

Ferris State posted a 1-0 win over Post in the opener before dropping a close 2-0 decision to Illinois-Springfield in the last of 12 games played in the Sunshine State. With the split, FSU closed its trip by winning seven of 12 contests overall.

In the opening game, FSU's Abby Highway tossed a four-hit shutout as she struck out four in seven innings of action.

Both teams managed only four hits in the first game of the day with the Bulldogs scoring the lone run in the top of the third frame on Sawyer Wightman's RBI single to left field.

FSU's Sarah Johnson recorded two hits and scored the lone run in the game while Emily Reed also had a hit along with Wightman. Post's Leslie Denis suffered the loss despite giving up the lone run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of work.

In the nightcap, Illinois-Springfield scored the only two runs of the contest in the sixth as UIS outhit the Bulldogs by a 6-1 margin to earn the win.

Ferris State's lone hit came off the bat of Sam Bates, who singled. Illinois-Springfield's Rachel Goff threw all seven innings versus FSU and allowed only the lone hit with two strikeouts and a walk in the shutout victory.

Meanwhile, Bates tossed five innings with two runs allowed on five hits and three walks for the Bulldogs. Senior Megan Hiler threw one inning and gave up only a single hit with no runs.

Ferris State returns to action in two weeks when the Bulldogs visit Ohio Dominican for the start of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Saturday, March 25, in Columbus, Ohio. First pitch for the opener is slated for 1 p.m. (ET).
