Ferris State Records Second-Straight GLIAC Weekend Road Split In Ohio

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the second consecutive day, the Ferris State University softball team registered a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road split as the Bulldogs took one of two games against the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday (March 25) in Columbus, Ohio.

FSU won game one 4-2 before falling in the second contest by a 10-3 count. With the split, combined with Friday's split at Ashland, the Bulldogs are presently off to a 2-2 start in conference action after the opening weekend of league play.

Ferris State came back from a 2-1 deficit in the opener to score two runs in the fourth and FSU then added one more in the sixth in pulling out the two-run victory despite being outhit 12-5 for the game.

Five different FSU batters recorded hits in the first contest of the day with Lexi Hongisto knocking a home run and Sam Bates driving in a team-high two runs with a double in the game.

Bates also earned the pitching victory as she moved to 5-2 overall this season by tossing all seven innings. She allowed 12 hits, but only two runs with three strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, Ferris State scored the opening run in the first inning and held a 1-0 edge going into the third before ODU struck for three runs in the third followed by two in the fourth, one in the fifth and four more in the seventh. FSU was limited to a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth the rest of the way. The two teams combined for 25 hits with the Panthers producing 15 and FSU 10.

The Bulldogs got three hits from second baseman Logan Fleming in addition to two from Sarah Johnson, who homered and had an RBI. Both Bates and Bailey Darwin also drove in runs in the setback.

In the circle, Abby Highway suffered the loss with five runs allowed on eight hits and two strikeouts. Overall, the Bulldogs utilized five pitchers, who combined to allowe 10 runs on 15 hits with three K's.

Ferris State will continue its league-opening eight game GLIAC road swing by taking on Hillsdale and Sunday next Saturday and Sunday (April 1-2), respectively.
