Ferris State Softball Wraps Up Season-Opening Tourney With Two Games In Indy

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad hit the field for two more games on Monday (Feb. 26) to wrap up its initial season-opening competition in Westfield, Ind.

After playing its first two outings on Sunday, the Bulldogs wrapped up the University of Indianapolis event with a pair of hard-fought setbacks on day two. FSU fell to the host Greyhounds 6-0 in the opener before suffering a close 9-8 decision versus Southern Indiana in game two.

In the opener, Indianapolis scored three times in the first inning before adding one more run in the fifth and two in the seventh to notch the win. The Greyhounds totaled seven hits to four for the Bulldogs. The contest was UIndy's 13th of the campaign to only the third for FSU.

Senior catcher Emily Reed notched two hits for the Bulldogs, including a double, with shortstop Lexee Summers and third baseman Lexi Hongisto both recording a hit each.

In the circle, FSU's Hannah Leppek suffered the loss with three hits and three runs allowed in four innings of work to go with a walk. Senior Sam Bates tossed two innings, giving up a single run on three hits with a strikeout while Katie Ross hurled one inning and surrendered two runs on one hit.

In the nightcap, Ferris State built a 4-1 lead after the first inning against Southern Indiana before the Screaming Eagles eventually tied the game up at five runs each following the third. Both teams netted two runs in the fourth with FSU getting the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth.

However, Southern Indiana produced two runs in the fifth and held FSU scoreless over the next two frames en route to the triupmh. The Screaming Eagles managed 13 hits to 10 for the Bulldogs.

Both Hongisto and Summers tallied three hits apiece for Ferris State with Katie Scheuer producing three RBI's on two hits. Hongisto also had two RBI's with Bates registering one for the Bulldogs. Scheuer tripled while Hongisto and Kayla Chamberlain doubled in the loss.

Sophomore Abby Highway threw three innings for the Bulldogs, giving up five runs on seven hits with four K's and a walk. Leppek hurled one two-run, two-hit inning with Bates pitching the final two innings and allowing two runs on four hits.

The game overall was the 10th for Southern Indiana compared to only the fourth for the Bulldogs this season.

Ferris State will return to action on Sunday (March 4) as FSU opens action at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Bulldogs will face C.W. Post (N.Y.) and regional foe Lewis (Ill.) in day one competition on Sunday at 9 a.m. (ET) and 11:30 a.m. (ET), respectively. Overall, FSU will play 12 games over a seven-day span in the Sunshiene State.
