Ferris State Softball Garners Split In League Road Series At Tiffin

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad compiled 15 runs and produced 22 hits while earning a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road split against the Tiffin Dragons on Sunday (April 8) in Ohio.

The Bulldogs nearly pulled out a sweep in their first action in over a week as a late comeback gave TU an 8-7 win in the opener before FSU responded with a decisive 8-2 victory in the nightcap.

Ferris State led the opening game 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Dragons produced seven runs to earn the win. Overall, they outhit FSU 11-7 in the first game of the afternoon set.

In the opener, the Bulldogs got three hits and three RBI's from first baseman Sarah Meredith, who both homered and doubled in the contest. Centerfielder Paige Kortz also doubled and drove in two runs while second baseman Logan Fleming added a double and an RBI. FSU's Kodi Ramirez also hit a double in the setback while Kortz added a sacrifice fly.

Senior Sam Bates hurled the first six and one-third innings while giving up eight runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Hannah Leppek pitched one-third of an inning with a single walk.

Ferris State responded in a big way in game two as the Bulldogs scored once in each of the first two frames before notching two runs in each of their final three at-bats while pounding out 15 hits overall in game two.

Senior catcher Emily Reed had a huge contest with five hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs with Meredith adding three RBI's and three hits. Fleming and leftfielder Emily Smith each totaled two hits as did Ramirez. In game two, Meredith added her second home run of the day while the Bulldogs got doubles from Smith, Fleming and Ramirez. Rebecca Piron added an RBI and a sac fly.

FSU's Abby Highway earned the game two win by allowing only two runs on six hits with two K's and a walk in six innings of action. Katie Ross also threw a single frame and gave up only a single with with a walk.

The Bulldogs are slated to return to action on home on Wednesday, April 11, against Davenport at the FSU Softball Field. First pitch for game one is set for 2:30 p.m. (ET) with game two to follow at approximately 4:30 p.m. (ET).
