Ferris State Softball Gets Two Games In Against Ashland At Madonna University

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad finally got back on the field Tuesday (April 17), but suffered a pair of setbacks to Ashland in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The two teams squared off in a league twinbill played at Madonna University in Livonia with the Eagles rallying for a 10-7 win in eight innings in the opener before scoring a 13-0 win in a five-inning nightcap.

In game one, the Bulldogs jumped in front early with four runs in the second frame before AU responded with five-straight to take a one-run advantage to the bottom of the fifth. In that half-inning, though, Ferris State scored twice to regain the league. Both teams notched a run in the sixth before Ashland notched the game-tying run in the seventh to force extra innings. AU scored three times in the eighth to break the tie en route to the victory.

The two teams combined for 23 hits in the opener with Ashland netting 12 and FSU 11 overall. Seven different hitters tallied hits for Ferris State with five totaling multiple hits for the Bulldogs.

Rightfielder Katie Scheuer homered for the Bulldogs and drove in four runs while left fielder Emily Smith along with first baseman Sarah Meredith, centerfielder Paige Kortz and designated player Lexee Summers all totaled two hits.

Sophomore Abby Highway earned the start and gave up five runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts before senior Sam Bates pitched the final three frames and allowed five runs on four hits with three walks and two K's.

Ashland had a pair of homers and three doubles in the game one win.

In game two, the Eagles picked up right where they left off and scored four runs in each of the first two innings along with three more in the third in building a commanding advantage. The Eagles then secured the win with two more runs in the fifth while registering 15 hits in the game and limiting the Bulldogs to only three.

The Bulldogs got hits in relief action from Madison McLeod along with Rebecca Piron and Madison Dinges in the setback.

Three different FSU pitchers combined for five walks and four strikeouts in the loss.

Ferris State is scheduled to face Northwood on Wednesday (April 18) in GLIAC action on the road. The Bulldogs then return home to host Wayne State on Friday (April 20) at the FSU Softball Field starting at 3 and 5 p.m. (ET).
