Ferris State Stays Alive For Postseason Berth With Road Sweep At Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad picked up a pair of big Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road wins on Saturday (April 28) as FSU stayed alive for a potential postseason berth by sweeping Wayne State in Detroit.

The Bulldogs moved in front of the Warriors for the eighth and final GLIAC Tournament berth with a sweep on Saturday as FSU took game one 9-8 and then beat the Warriors 10-2 in five innings in the nightcap.

With the two wins, FSU enters the final day of regular-season play slightly in front of WSU for the only remaining tournament berth. FSU will host Purdue-Northwest on Sunday (April 29) with the Warriors taking on Saginaw Valley State. The last remaining spot will be determined based on league winning percentage between the two schools.

In the opener, Ferris State got the winning run to break the tie in the top half of the seventh inning before holding the Warriors scoreless in their final at-bat to win the game despite being outhit 10-8 in the game.

Ferris State got a pair of home runs from sophomore first baseman Sarah Merdith and rightfielder Katie Scheuer in the opener with Scheuer, catcher Emily Reed and second baseman Logan Fleming all posting doubles.

Meredith tallied two hits and drove in three runs while the Bulldogs also got two hits from third baseman Lexi Hongisto along with two RBI's each from Scheuer, Reed and Fleming.

FSU's Abby Highway earned the victory in game one by allowing only six earned runs on 10 hits in six innings. Senior Sam Bates earned the save with a single scoreless inning.

In game two, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first inning then scored twice more in the second and five times in the third to put the game away. FSU totaled 12 hits to eight for the Warriors.

Reed homered in game two and accounted for five RBI's at the plate while Meredith and Fleming both tallied doubles. Leftfielder Emily Smith along with Fleming and Reed all had two hits as did Hongisto. The Bulldogs got three RBI's from Fleming and two from designated player Lexee Summers.

Bates hurled all five innings of the nightcap, giving up only two runs on eight hits for the win.

Ferris State will host Purdue Northwest on Sunday back at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids with the first pitch for game one set for 12 p.m. (ET) and game two to follow at approximately 2 p.m. (ET).
