Ferris State Softball Notches Saturday Sweep In Indiana Against Regional Competition

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team closed out a weekend trip to Indiana with a sweep on Saturday (Feb. 23) as the Bulldogs earned two regional wins.

FSU took the opener over Bellarmine (Ky.) by an 8-3 score before coming back to top Rockhurst (Mo.) in an eight-inning affair by a 7-3 score at Grand Park in Westfield.

In the opener, the Bulldogs tallied three runs in the first inning and added two more in the third and fifth while building a 7-0 lead. The Knights put their first two runs up in the sixth before FSU answered with a single run. The Bulldogs then limited BU to only a single run in their final at-bat to garner the win.

The Bulldogs got three hits from Kaitlyn Orme in the win over Bellarmine to go with two hits each from Kodi Ramirez and outfielder Paige Kortz. Ramirez had a squad-best three RBI's while Lexi Hongisto, Jessica Tucci and Rebecca Piron joined Orme with a single run batted in. Tucci scored twice in the victory.

Offensively, Orme tripled while both Ramirez and Tucci doubled for FSU. Ferris State totaled nine hits as compared to 11 for the Knights.

Bulldog pitcher Abby Highway got the win while throwing all seven innings for Ferris State. She allowed only three runs on 11 hits and struck out one.

Meanwhile, in game two, Ferris State scored a single run in both the second and third innings to take the initial lead. FSU added another run in the sixth before the Hawks responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the seventh to tie the game up. In the extra inning, FSU put four runs on the road in top half of the frame and held off Rockhurst to garner the victory.

Tucci led the Bulldogs with three hits in the finale while Ramirez, Kortz, Logan Fleming and Lexi Hongisto each totaled two hits. Kortz drove in three runs with Kylie Winkels notching two RBI's in the victory.

In game two, Kortz tripled as did Tucci while Hongisto had a double.

The Bulldogs' Connor Proctor earned the game two victory by hurling all eight innings of work. She allowed three runs on five hits with a single walk in the victory.

With the sweep on Saturday, FSU closed its four-game weekend trip with a split and the Bulldogs are now 4-4 overall this year.

Ferris State will head to Florida for its annual trip to The Spring Games in Clermont March 9-15. The Bulldogs open action versus Saint Anselm on Saturday, March 9, at 1:30 p.m. (ET) in the Sunshine State.
