Bulldog Softball Closes Trip To The Spring Games In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad closed out its trip to The Spring Games in Florida with a pair of non-league setbacks on Friday (March 15) in Clermont, Fla.

The Bulldogs had their four-game winning streak halted in the opener as Bridgeport pulled out an 11-2 triumph in five innings. FSU battled Pittsburgh-Johnstown to the finish in game two, but fell 3-1 in their finale in the Sunshine State.

In the opener, Bridgeport got off to a quick start as they tallied three runs in the first and seven more in the second in building a 10-run lead. FSU scored once in the bottom of the second and another time in the third before Bridgeport added an insurance run in the fifth and kept the Bulldogs off the board to finish the contest. Overall, FSU was outhit 14-7 for the game.

The Bulldogs were led by second baseman Kodi Ramirez, who tallied a pair of hits and scored once. Both shortstop Logan Fleming and Jessica Tucci tallied RBI's as each doubled. Ramirez had a pair of doubles with Kylie Winkels also adding a two-bagger and Kaitlyn Orme knocking a triple in the setback.

Ferris State utilized four different pitchers in the game as the quartet of Abby Highway, Kirsten Johnson, Omore and Katie Ross combined to allow 11 runs on 14 hits with four walks and a strikeout.

In game two, Pitt-Johnstown picked up three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. The Bulldogs held the opposition scoreless the rest of the way, but could manage only a single run in the sixth in the defeat. FSU totaled four hits compared to eight for Pitt-Johnstown.

Ramirez tallied three hits and scored once while accounting for FSU's only RBI in game two as she both doubled and homered in the outing. Tucci added the Bulldogs' only other hit of the game.

For Ferris State, Connor Proctor hurled game two and allowed three runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in six innings of work.

The Bulldogs dropped to 9-11 overall with the two setbacks on Friday, but finished the trip to Florida by winning four of their last six games and five of the final nine.

Ferris State will return to Michigan and is slated to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on the road at Wayne State on Wednesday, March 20, in Detroit. First pitch for game one is set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) with game two to follow at approximately 5:30 p.m. (ET).
