Bulldog Softball Drops Two Close Games To Lewis

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State Softball squad hit the field again on Wednesday (March 15), coming up short in a pair of tightly-contested regional matchups against Lewis (Ill.) in Illinois.

The Bulldogs fell in the opener 7-3 at The Ballpark in Rosemont before dropping a thrilling 3-2 decision in nine innings in the finale.

The Flyers tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth in game one to break a 3-3 deadlock while garnering the win. LU had 11 hits to seven for the Bulldogs.

FSU was led at the plate by designated player Kaitlyn Orme with two hits in the initial matchup. She both doubled and tripled in the game while FSU got RBI's from Abby Meyer, Kylie Winkels and Abby Mitchell.

In the pitching circle, Aryn Gallacher tossed five and one-thirds of an inning, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kristie Gray threw two-thirds of a frame and did not allow a run on a single hit.

In game two, the Flyers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before FSU eventually tied the game up with a single run in the sixth. The two teams battled to extra innings with each scoring a run in the eighth before the Flyers finally ended the tilt in the bottom of the ninth. Lewis finished with eight hits and held FSU to only four.

Meyer had two of FSU's four hits while Winkels and catcher Kaitlyn Fick each had one. Winkels drove in a run as did Orme. FSU also stole three bases.

The Bulldogs' Catherine O'Donohue tossed eight and one-thirds of an inning, giving up a single earned run on eight hits with six K's and a walk.

Ferris State will be back in action on Thursday (March 16) versus Tiffin in a regional doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (ET) in Ohio.
