Ferris State Softball Resumes Florida Action With Split On Thursday

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team resumed action on Thursday (March 7) at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games in Florida and battled a split in a pair of eight-inning contests in the Sunshine State.

After an off day on Wednesday, the Bulldogs opened up action with a 4-2 triumph over Cedarville in Thursday's opener before falling to Mercy by a 3-2 count in another eight-inning game.

With the split, the Bulldogs now own a 6-2 mark thru eight games at the Space Coast Spring Games with four games remaining over the next two days.

In Thursday's opening game against Cedarville, the Bulldogs beat the Yellow Jackets for the third consecutive time, totaling seven hits in the game. FSU opened the scoring in the fifth with two runs before Cedarville answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Bulldogs answered, though, with two additional runs in the eighth to come away victorious.

For Ferris State, both Emily Killion and Alexis Kozlowski posted two hits each while Killion also knocked in two runs. Maddie Gkekas doubled in the victory.

In the pitching circle, Catherine O'Donohue allowed only three hits in four innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Rylie Haist tossed two scoreless innings while Ashley Webb allowed two runs on two hits in one-third of a frame. Finally, Izzy Regner struck out three and did not give up a hit or a run in one and two-thirds innings.

In the second game against Mercy, both teams finished with five hits in a tightly-contested affair. Ferris State produced the opening run in the second, but Mercy put two on the board in the third. FSU tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh before the opposition came up with the winning run in the eighth and held FSU off the board.

Five different hitters produced a hit for FSU with Macy Verbeek recording a double and Emma Gillard a triple. Both Gillard and Gkekas had an RBI in the setback.

Regner pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Aryn Gallacher threw five innings and gave up no runs on two hits with four K's.

The Bulldogs will play a twin bill against Illinois-Springfield on Friday (March 8) starting at 10 a.m. (ET) and 12:15 p.m. (ET), respectively.
