Ferris State Softball Closes Big Week In Florida With Saturday Sweep

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University Bulldogs capped off a highly-successful week in Florida with a sweep on Saturday (March 9) at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games.

The Bulldogs wrapped up their annual spring break trip with two wins, bringing their overall record on the week to 8-4 in the Sunshine State.

In Saturday's final day of action, FSU posted a 6-2 win in the opener over Mercy College before coming back for a 4-2 triumph over Barry (Fla.) in the trip finale.

Ferris State scored two runs in the first inning in the opener and added four runs in the second to build a 6-1 lead thru two innings and from there kept Mercy at bay the rest of the way outside of a single run in the sixth. Overall, Mercy had 10 hits and FSU finished with nine.

FSU's Catherine O'Donohue tallied three hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs while both Emily Killion and Alexis Kozlowski notched two hits and an RBI each. Both Kozlowski and Killion had doubles while Brooklyn Verbeek and Kozlowski tripled.

In the pitching circle, Izzy Regner threw two innings and allowed a single earned run on four hits with two strikeouts. Rylie Haist tossed four innings, giving up only one earned run on six hits in addition to two K's as well. Finally, Aryn Gallacher had one strikeout and did not allow a hit or a run in one inning of work.

Ferris State did not allow a hit in game two, posting seven while holding Barry to none in a 4-2 win. The Bulldogs scored twice in the first and twice in the fourth with the Buccaneers held to a pair of runs in the sixth.

Shortstop Emma Gillard had two hits for the Bulldogs in the game two win with five others all notching a single hit. Both Gillard and Kozlowski posted doubles.

O'Donohue along with Ashley Webb and Sophie Wisniski combined to allow only one earned run and no hits with four strikeouts and three walks in the circle.

Ferris State will return home and host Lewis (Ill.) in regional play for the 2024 home opener on Tuesday, March 19, at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 1 p.m. (ET).
