GREENWOOD, S.C. – Jasmine Judge hit five 3-pointers to lead nationally 10th-ranked Lander to a 72-51 victory over Ferris State on Sunday (Nov. 20) in the final game of the two-day tournament played at Lander University's Horne Arena in Greenwood, S.C.
The tournament featured three ranked teams out of four, including No. 17 South Carolina Aiken and 27th-ranked Barton College. Each team went 1-1 in the tournament, including Ferris State's upset victory over Aiken and Lander's two-point loss to Barton Saturday.
Lander (1-1) bounced back from Saturday's loss, never trailing on Sunday.
Judge, one of the nation's top 3-point shooters, made only one on Saturday but hit five out of eight from behind the arc Sunday and led all scorers with 16 points.
Ciara Lyons added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists for Lander. Janyce Ealey scored 13 points, and Mukia Myrick added 12 points and five assists. Keondra Barnes had a game-high seven rebounds for the Lady Bearcats.
Bulldog senior guard Tricia Principe was 4-for-5 from behind the arc and led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Senior guard Kelsey DeNoyelles added 10 points while sophomore guard Sarah DeShone had nine assists. Freshman forward Christina Branch was Ferris State's top rebounder with six.
Each team made 20 field goals, but Lander made 24 free throws to Ferris State's six.
The Lady Bearcats made 20 of 48 shots from the floor (42 percent), 24 of 30 free throws (80 percent) and eight of 24 from 3-point range (33 percent). Lander had a 32-29 edge on the boards and forced 21 turnovers. The Lady Bearcats committed 13 turnovers.
Ferris State made 20 of 52 shots (42 percent), six of eight free throws (75 percent) and five of 15 from behind the arc (33 percent).
Lyons made two fast-break baskets and Judge hit a 3-pointer, staking Lander to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
Ferris State missed 11 of its first 12 shots from the floor. But the Bulldogs finally made their second shot of the game at the 12:50 mark on DeShone's fast-break layup, then DeNoyelles swished a 3-pointer, and sophomore forward Ashley Rando hit two free throws to pull Ferris State within 11-9 with 11:30 to go.
Lyons knifed inside for a layup, ending a four-minute Lady Bearcat scoring drought and increasing the lead to 13-9 at the 10:55 mark.
Lander regained its nine-point lead on Judge's second 3-pointer of the game, making it 22-13 with 8:31 left. But Principe answered with a 3-pointer and junior guard Kylie Muntz added two free throws to pull the Bulldogs within 22-18 at the seven-minute mark.
The Lady Bearcats maintained their lead by hitting free throws but were unable to pull away due to missing nine consecutive shots from the floor. Myrick ended the seven-plus minute scoring drought from the floor with a basket with 55 seconds left in the half, and Judge followed with a 3 from the left corner to give Lander a 31-23 halftime lead.
After Branch converted a nifty pass from DeShone into a layup, pulling the Bulldogs within 35-28, Judge hit another timely 3. Her fourth trey pushed Lander's lead back to double figures with 17:33 to go.
Ealey hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Bearcats their largest lead of the game at 12 points, 44-32, at the 16-minute mark.
Lander freshman Ashley Watts hit the first 3-pointer of her career, extending the lead to 49-34 with 12 minutes to go.
After Principe and sophomore forward Nikki Arner scored to pull the Bulldogs within 10 points, Kami Phillips hit another big 3-pointer for Lander to increase the advantage to 52-39 with 11:10 left.
Judge struck again from behind the arc, giving the Lady Bearcats their largest lead of the game at 18 points, 57-39, with 8:21 remaining.
Phillips hit two free throws with 3:52 left, extending Lander's largest lead to 19 points at 65-46. Myrick's steal and layup gave the Lady Bearcats a 70-51 lead at the 1:25 mark.
Lander's Kaylyn Small made a layup with 28 seconds left to close the scoring.
Ferris State, which is now 2-1 overall, is now idle until the Bulldogs open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on the road at Tiffin on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. (ET).
