FSU's DeShone Attains All-America Laurels

Big Rapids, Mich. - Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown) of the 2011-12 Ferris State University women's basketball squad has earned Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Honorable Mention All-America honors for her efforts on the hardwood this campaign.

DeShone led the Bulldogs in scoring in 2011-12 as FSU won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division crown for the second time in school history and reached the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semifinals.

A first-team All-GLIAC honoree, DeShone also received GLIAC All-Tournament Team accolades this past season as the Bulldogs placed second in the the league tournament.  She was a Daktronics Division II All-Midwest Region Second Team honoree.

The All-America was selected by a vote of the selection committee. The committee is composed of one representative from each of the eight geographical regions and a chairperson.

This season, DeShone averaged 14.1 points and 4.6 assists per contest in leading the Bulldogs to a 23-7 overall mark.  FSU finished with a 17-2 mark in GLIAC play this campaign and won the league's North Division Championship for only the second time in school history in addition to earning conference tournament runner-up honors. 

Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. DeShone joins former Bulldog players Lucy DeMartin and Tianna Kirkland along with Rachel Folcik and Erin Miller as the only players in the program's history to attain any type of All-America accolades. DeMartin was honored as a Division II Women's Basketball Bulletin Honorable Mention selection in 2003-04 while Kirkland was a Division II Women's Basketball Bulletin Third Team All-America pick during the 2000-01 campaign. Both Miller and DeMartin were among the Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America Honorable Mention nominees in 2003-04. Folcik most recently was chosen to the WBCA Honorable Mention All-American team in 2006-07.
