* The Week Ahead: The Ferris State women's basketball team heads to Allendale to face archrival Grand Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday (March 2) night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Tipoff for the regular-season finale is set for 8 p.m. (ET).
* Media Coverage: Saturday's game will not be broadcast locally by Sunny 97.3 FM due to Bulldog Hockey coverage, but will be carried live online by the Bulldog Sports Network starting with the Meijer Pregame Show a half-hour prior to the men's tipoff. * Tough Weekend: Ferris State suffered a pair of league losses last week as the Bulldogs had a three-game winning streak snapped. FSU fell at divisional leader Wayne State 80-61 on Thursday (Feb. 21) before dropping a 71-66 decision at home in the final game at Wink Arena on Saturday (Feb. 23). Junior guard Sarah DeShone reached double-digits in both games with 18 points versus SVSU and 11 at WSU. Both senior Kylie Muntz and Felicia Standley tallied 12 points apiece in the loss to Saginaw Valley State while junior forward Ashley Rando had 10 points in each game.
* The Second Meeting: Saturday's game marks the second matchup between the Bulldogs and Lakers this season. Despite shooting over 50% for the game, Ferris State could not beat archrival Grand Valley State in the initial meeting as the Lakers came away with a 83-73 triumph over the Bulldogs in GLIAC action (Feb. 2) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs shot 52.9% for the afternoon, including a 63% clip in the opening half, but turned the ball over 25 times and gave up 14 offensive rebounds. Grand Valley State connected on 45.6% of its field goals, but was 12-of-27 (44.4%) from the three-point line and sank nine-of-12 (75%) free throws.
* The GLIAC Tourney: The Bulldogs have clinched a berth in the 2013 GLIAC Tournament. The quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday, March 6, at four campus locations. The top four seeds regardless of division will host opening-round games with the official pairings released by the league office at the conclusion of regular-season play. The top remaining seed will host the semifinals/finals on March 9-10.
* The Records: Ferris State (13-11, 12-9 GLIAC) finished the 2011-12 women's basketball season with a 23-7 overall record, which matched the school record set previously in 2006-07 for most wins in a campaign. Last year marked the 15th time in the last 16 seasons the Bulldogs have registered double-digit wins in a campaign. FSU also reached the semifinals at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament last year.
Grand Valley State (18-7, 14-7 GLIAC) is currently third in the GLIAC North and fifth overall in the league standings heading into the matchup. The Lakers have won three of their last four games to date this year and are coming off a 61-58 home victory over Wayne State last Saturday (Feb. 23) in Allendale.
* The Coaches: Ferris State – Colleen Lamoreaux-Tate (Aquinas), 1st season, 13-11 (.542) - (0-1 vs. GVSU). A veteran coach with 26 years of experience on the sidelines and regarded as one of the state's top prep coaches prior to her FSU arrival, Lamoreaux-Tate most recently spent the last seven years as the varsity girls basketball coach at Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School where she guided the Cougars to a 167-19 cumulative record.
Grand Valley State – Janel Burgess, (Iowa State, 1998), 6th year at GVSU. Burgess came to GVSU after three years as an assistant at Missouri State, four years at Michigan State and one year at Maine. Burgess led the Lakers to a 16-12 mark her first season followed by a 20-
10 record and a berth in the NCAA-II Tourney in 2008-09.
* GLIAC North Run: The Bulldogs have one conference regular-season game remaining this campaign. Overall, the Bulldogs have currently won 29 of their last 39 conference regular-season games dating back to the start of the 2011-12 season. FSU posted a first-place 17-2 mark in league play a year ago en route to claiming the North Division crown and currently has a 12-9 league mark to date this season.
* Playoff Seeding On The Line: The Bulldogs head into Saturday's tilt in sixth place overall in the GLIAC with a 13-11 mark and a 12-9 conference record. GVSU has secured the number five seed for the conference tournament as the Lakers are 18-7 overall and 14-7 in league play. However, Ferris State is only one game in front of Saginaw Valley State and the Bulldogs could face one of three different teams in the quarterfinals pending the outcome of Saturday's action.
* Series History: GVSU holds a 54-27 advantage heading into Saturday's 82nd encounter. The Lakers have claimed 12 of the last 21 series' matchups, but fell to FSU twice last season as the Bulldogs recorded a 58-50 win at Wink Arena (1/28/12) along with a 46-44 regular-season finale triumph in Allendale (2/25/12). The two teams split two games in 2010-11 with GVSU posting a 69-62 win over FSU (1/29/11) in the "131 Showdown" at Van Andel Arena prior to Ferris State's exciting 65-62 triumph in the regular-season finale (2/26/11) at Wink Arena. FSU has won six of the last 12 matchups overall.
* GLIAC Tourney History: Ferris has posted a 10-12 overall record in 13 previous league women's basketball tournament appearances prior to this year and will be making its second consecutive appearance in the women's field. Last year's berth was the Bulldogs' first since 2008-09.
* GLIAC Tourney Scenarios: The Bulldogs need a win or a Saginaw Valley State loss to clinch the number six seed in the conference tourney where they would travel to either Michigan Tech or Wayne State. However, should FSU and SVSU finish in a tie, the Cardinals would own the tiebreaker and the Bulldogs would drop to the number seven seed and visit Findlay.
* Looking At The Opponent: Sixth-year head coach Janel Burgess' team is presently 18-7 overall and 14-7 in the GLIAC North. The Lakers have won three of their last four games to date and are coming off a 61-58 league victory over divisional leader Wayne State last Saturday (Feb. 23) in Allendale. GVSU has posted an 10-2 home record with a 8-2 GLIAC home mark this year to date. Senior forward Briauna Taylor leads the Lakers in scoring at 15.9 points per game.
* Last Year In Allendale: Ferris State closed out the regular-season a year ago with a hard-fought 46-44 win over archrival Grand Valley State (2/25/12) at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale. The Bulldogs trailed by two points in a low-scoring first half, but outscored the Lakers 32-28 over the final 20 minutes to notch the win. Nikki Arner paced FSU with a game-high 17 points in the contest while Tricia Principe added nine points. Ferris State held Grand Valley State without a field goal in the final five minutes of the game and the Lakers did not score over the last four minutes. The win also allowed FSU to post a season sweep over Grand Valley State for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign.
