Bulldog Women Nearly Snap Huskies' Nine-Game Win Streak

Houghton, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team took one of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) unbeaten teams to the wire and nearly snapped Michigan Tech's nine-game winning streak in a hard-fought 71-70 setback on Thursday (Jan. 16) night in Hougton.

The Bulldogs led by double-digits in the second half after playing one of its best first-half performances of the season, but the Huskies caught fire in the second half and battled back to earn the victory.

Ferris State grabbed a rebound in the closing seconds and had the game's final possession with a chance to win. However, a contested three-point shot from sophomore guard Dena Droste came up short as time expired as MTU won for the 10th-straight time and moved to a perfect 9-0 in GLIAC play.

Droste had the hot hand early as she drilled four three-pointers in the opening half to spark FSU to the early advantage. She finished with a team-high 19 points in the contest and made five three's to go with two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs also received a solid interior production in the opening half from sophomore forward Christina Branch, who finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Sarah DeShone added 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior forward Hannah Hoffman contributed both seven points and seven rebounds.

Michigan Tech's second-half comeback was fueled by Mackenzie Perttu, who totaled a game-high 26 points on the night. Paige Albi added 16 points and Danielle Blake scored 11 points for the Huskies in the victory.

Ferris State shot 45.3% for the night and made five-of-13 (38.5%) three's along with 17-of-24 (70.8%) free throws.

On the opposite side, MTU converted 42.3% of its field goal tries and hit 11-of-23 (47.8%) three-point attempts to go with a 16-of-22 (72.7%) showing at the line.

The Huskies came up with 35 rebounds to 32 for the Bulldogs and had 12 offensive boards to nine for Ferris State.

The Bulldogs did force 14 Michigan Tech turnovers and had only 11 miscues of their own as they fell to 4-7 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC.

Overall, the lead changed hands nine times and the score was tied eight times as the two teams battled back and forth down the stretch.

Ferris State will square off against Northern Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 18) to complete a four-game league road swing inside the Berry Events Center at Marquette. The contest gets underway at 11 a.m. (ET).
