Ferris State Pulls Out Thrilling Double-Overtime Road Victory At LSSU

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - Two-Time All-America senior guard Sarah DeShone went coast-to-coast for a basket to force a second extra session and the Bulldogs made several critical plays in the double-overtime period to pull out a thrilling 72-68 victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday (Feb. 15) in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs trailed by five points at halftime, but outscored the host Lakers by five in the second frame to send the game to overtime. Ferris State trailed by two in the closing seconds of the first overtime period before DeShone went all the way to the basket for the game-tying lay-in as time expired in the first extra frame.

In the second period, the Bulldogs outscored LSSU 10-6 in earning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road triumph.

DeShone paced FSU with a game-high tying 19 points while sophomore guard Katie Mavis added 17 points and sophomore forward/center Christina Branch netted 11 points and a contest-best 15 rebounds in a double-double showing.

Ferris State shot only 31.5% from the floor and was four-of-13 (30.8%) from downtown, but FSU connected on 22-of-32 (68.8%) free throws in the victory.

The Bulldogs also held a 58-47 rebounding edge in the game and pulled down 18 offensive boards to only 11 for the Lakers in beating LSSU for the second time this season.

LSSU was led by Stephanie Fisher, who totaled 19 points on six-of-16 shooting and made five three's after previously scoring 34 points against the Bulldogs in the first meeting between the two teams in January at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

Along with Fisher, the Lakers received 12 points from April LaCross along with 11 by Kelsey Ance and 10 from Kandace Crittendon.

Both teams netted 13 assists in the contest with DeShone totaling four for Ferris State. FSU also totaled six steals and five blocked shots.

On the Lake Superior State side, guard Megan Manninen totaled eight assists to go with eight points. LSSU also received four blocked shots from Laura VanEs as part of its six in the game and recorded three steals overall.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 7-13 overall and 7-11 in the GLIAC while LSSU dropped to 5-20 overall and 5-14 in conference action.

Ferris State returns home to host Wayne State on Thursday (Feb. 20) at Wink Arena with tipoff set for 6 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
