Ferris State Women's Basketball Posts Most Decisive Victory Of The Year In Win At SVSU

University Center, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team posted its most decisive victory of the 2014-15 campaign on Saturday (Jan. 31) as the Bulldogs recorded a 77-48 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road triumph over Saginaw Valley State at O'Neill Arena in University Center, Mich.

Ferris State handed the Cardinals their seventh-straight loss of the year as they shot 48.4% on the road and had a season-low seven turnovers in the victory.

SVSU started quickly and led the Bulldogs by 11 points with 8:09 to play in the opening half before a double-digit FSU run gave Ferris State a 35-25 edge at halftime.

In the second half, the Bulldogs got off to a quick start and cruised from there by outscoring the Cardinals 42-23 over the final 20 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs connected on 31-of-64 (48.4%) shots overall from the floor and made seven-of-18 (38.9%) three's to go with eight-of-16 (50%) free throws.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals connected on only 26.9% of their field goals and were only three-of-18 (16.7%) beyond the three-point stripe, but did make 17-of-19 (89.5%) free throws.

Besides turning the ball over only seven times, the Bulldogs also forced 19 SVSU turnovers and held a 20-6 advantage in points off miscues. FSU was credited with 10 steals and had six blocked shots while the Cardinals netted two steals and two swats.

Junior guard Ally Christman paced FSU with a game-high 16 points while junior guard Destiney Robinson added 10 points and scored several key buckets on drives to the basket. Senior forward Ashley Rando and freshman forward Rachel McInerney both added nine points each. McInerney also added a game-high 10 rebounds in her return to her hometown of Saginaw.

Along with those four players, FSU also had four others score six points each and all 11 players who saw action scored for a Bulldog team playing without junior guard Dena Droste due to injury.

Saginaw Valley State was led by forward Emily Wendling, who totaled 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss as SVSU fell to 6-14 overall and 1-13 in the GLIAC. Both Samantha Zirzow and Jessica Alexander chipped in eight points apiece.

Ferris State improved to 9-8 overall and evened its league mark at 7-7 on the year by winning for the second time in the last three outings.

Along with the decisive edge in points off turnovers, FSU also scored 30 points in the paint to only 10 for the Cardinals and held a 43 to 12 margin in bench scoring.

Following Monday's road encounter, FSU returns home to host nationally-ranked Michigan Tech on Thursday (Feb. 5) night before playing host to Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon as round two of GLIAC North Division play begins.
