Bulldog Women's Basketball Battles To End In Narrow Road Setback

Midland, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad battled to the end, but came up just short on Thursday (Jan. 21) evening as Northwood posted a 62-57 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory inside Riepma Arena.

The Bulldogs were strong out of the gate, taking a 14-11 lead on Northwood, but were outscored 37-23 in the second and third quarters combined and trailed by 11 going into the final quarter.

A 13-1 run to open the fourth period had the Bulldogs ahead, but the Timberwolves clawed in front in the closing 80 seconds to escape with a five-point victory.

Sophomore forward Rachel McInerney carried the Bulldogs offensively, especially at the beginning of the fourth when she scored on three consecutive possessions.

McInerney finished with a game-high 24 points and hauled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Her performance also was highlighted by a game-high four blocked shots and a steal in 40 minutes of action.

Senior guard Katie Mavis had a big bucket in the fourth with a three-pointer from the corner, as she finished with a second-best nine points for the Bulldogs. Mavis added a game-high six assists as well.

Senior forward Alexis Huntey finished with 11 rebounds and added seven points, as the Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 42-38 over the Timberwolves.

Northwood's Jordyn Nurenberg finished with a game-high 12 rebounds, but no other player for the Timberwolves had more than six overall.

Northwood's Lauren Robak tied McInerney's 24 to lead the way for the Timberwolves. Robak finished 4-of-8 from beyond the three-point line.

The Timberwolves shot 7-of-17 from beyond the arc while the Bulldogs finished 2-of-15 in that regard.

McInerney's effort in the paint helped Ferris State to a 36-32 advantage in paint scoring.

Northwood improved to 10-7 on the season and 6-5 in GLIAC play with the victory.

Ferris State returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 23) as the Bulldogs hit the road to take on the Lake Superior State Lakers in Sault Ste. Marie starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
