Bulldog Women Battle NMU Close In Upper Peninsula Road Setback

Marquette, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad battled the Northern Michigan Wildcats much of the way on Saturday (Feb. 6) before falling 59-49 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play inside NMU's Berry Events Center.

NMU jumped out to a 15-12 lead after one period and held a 28-23 lead at the break. FSU fought back in the second period and kept the game close before a late Wildcat run salted the game away as the Bulldogs wrapped up a two-game stretch in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The Bulldogs had three players reach double-figure scoring in the late morning game with sophomore center Rachel McInerney tallying 10 points, senior forward Alexis Huntey scoring 10 points and freshman guard Alexis Bush chipping in 10 points.

Huntey recorded a game-high 16 rebounds in yet another double-double showing for the Bulldogs while McInerney also grabbed 10 boards to finish with a double-double of her own.

However, NMU's Bre Gaspervich scored a game-high 27 points for the Wildcats and sank six-of-nine three's in the contest, including a couple of key ones late in the final period to help NMU pull away. She was the lone Northern Michigan player to reach double-digits.

Ferris State shot 35% from the floor and went six-of-14 (43%) from three-point range along with seven-of-eight (88%) at the line.

Meanwhile, Northern Michigan hit on 37% of its field goals and made six-of-18 (33.3%) three's along with 13-of-17 (76.5%) free throws.

Ferris State was outrebounded slightly 38-34 for the game and turned the ball over 16 times compared to 11 for the hosts. NMU outscored FSU 19-13 in points off turnovers, but FSU did own an 8-1 advantage in second chance production.

Overall, FSU also finished with 10 assists, six blocked shots and five steals while NMU had nine assists, nine steals and five blocks.

Ferris State will return home to begin a three-game homestand on Thursday (Feb. 11) as FSU hosts Northwood in an 6 p.m. (ET) league game at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs then host Lake Superior State on Saturday (Feb. 13) starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
