McInerney's Big Day Lifts Ferris State Women's Hoops To Home Win

Big Rapids, Mich. - Sophomore forward Rachel McInerney tallied a career-high 32 points as the Ferris State University women's basketball team took down the Lake Superior State Lakers 71-56 on Saturday (Feb. 13) inside Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start, leading 28-20 headed into the half, and never looked back as they outscored the Lakers in all four quarters en route to their fifth win of the year.

Outside of McInerney's big day with 32 points and 12 boards, senior forward Alexis Huntey grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds and added 11 points of her own as both notched double-double performances. Senior guard Katie Mavis also had 11 points and had a game-high eight assists while Huntey chipped in with seven before the home fans.

McInerney also earned game-high honors in blocks as the junior finished with four for the afternoon.

Both teams hit their share of big three-point shots, but the Bulldogs led the way as they shot 8-of-12 from beyond the arc at a blistering 67% overeall.

The Bulldogs, who were coming off a home setback to Northwood on Thursday night, rebounded in a big way as they dominated the Lakers. On the glass, Ferris State outrebounded Lake Superior State 47-31 with Huntey grabbing nearly half of the caroms herself.

Ferris State also doubled Lake Superior State in trips to the line, and cashed in, shooting 17-of-23 for the evening. The Lakers hit only eight shots from the charity stripe.

Lake Superior State had only two players score in double-figures. Mackenzie Edwards finished with 19 points in leading LSSU. Valerie Meissner added 10 points and led the Lakers in rebounds with 11 while also notching a double-double.

This season, McInerney has now scored 10 or more points in 10 consecutive games, and in 21 out of her 25 games played this year. Her previous season and career-high in points was back on Dec. 5 against Ashland when she had 27 points and shot 11-of-16 from the floor, as well as 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

With the victory, the Bulldogs moved to 5-20 overall and 5-14 in the GLIAC. The Lakers fell to 5-20 overall and 4-15 in the GLIAC.

Ferris State is next in action on Thursday (Feb. 18) when the Hillsdale College Chargers come to town for Senior Night festivities. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. (ET) in what will represent FSU's final regular-season home contest.
