Ferris State Women's Basketball Falls On Road At SVSU

University Center, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State Cardinals avenged an earlier season loss to the Ferris State University Bulldogs by recording a 90-57 triumph in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday (Feb. 20) night at SVSU's O'Neill Arena in University Center, Mich.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-point first quarter advantage behind the play of freshman forward Halee Nieman and held a 43-23 lead at halftime. Nieman tallied 20 points in the opening half of play for SVSU.

Nieman finished with a game-high 32 points as the Cardinals moved to 19-7 overall and 16-5 in the GLIAC by beating FSU and avenging the Bulldogs' 57-55 buzzer-beating triumph at Jim Wink Arena on Jan. 30.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore center Rachel McInerney, who tallied a team-high 17 points in her return to the Saginaw area. Redshirt freshman forward Hannah Guy added a personal career-high 10 points off the bench for FSU.

Ferris State was limited to 43% shooting overall and went five-of-10 (50%) from three-point range along with 10-of-12 (83%) at the free throw line.

Meanwhile, SVSU hit on 53% of its field goals and went nine-of-16 (56%) from downtown in addition to sinking 19-of-21 (90.5%) free throws.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over 22 times compared to only 12 for SVSU, which led to a 29-10 difference in points off turnovers in favor of the Cardinals.

Ferris State was also outrebounded 32-22 for the evening and outscored in the paint 36-24 by the Cardinals.

Along with McInerney and Guy, FSU received six points each from freshman guard Margo Brown and freshman Alexis Bush.

The Bulldogs finished with 16 assists, seven steals and four blocked shots with SVSU netting 19 assists, 12 steals and a single block. SVSU never trailed in the contest and led for more than 38 minutes of the game after the early start.

Ferris State wraps up the 2015-16 campaign next Thursday (Feb. 25) as FSU visits archrival Grand Valley State for a 6 p.m. (ET) league tilt inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.
