Ferris State Women's Basketball Wraps Up 2016-17 Season With Rivalry Setback

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team wrapped up its 2016-17 season with a 68-49 setback to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Grand Valley State on Thursday (Feb. 23) night at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

FSU Junior guard Leah Humes led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down four rebounds while junior forward Rachel McInerney chipped in 12 points and five rebounds to go with three blocks.

Combined in the first, third and fourth quarters, Ferris State outscored the Lakers by two, but the second quarter proved the difference between the Bulldogs and Lakers.

FSU and GVSU played to an 11-11 dead heat in the first frame, but the Lakers took off in the second, outscoring the Bulldogs 26-5 which made for the difference in the basketball game.

Ferris State was even in the third quarter until a last second Laker jump shot gave GVSU a 17-15 edge in the third frame.

In the final quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Lakers 18-14, though their effort was not enough to overcome the second-quarter deficit.

Both squads struggled to shoot, with Grand Valley State hitting at a rate of 41.5 percent and the Bulldogs at 38.9 percent. The Lakers had six three-pointers to the Bulldogs' two for the game. 

Sophomore guard Alexis Bush also had eight points and tied for the team lead with four assists. Playing in her final collegiate game, senior forward Joslyn Nicholson had five rebounds to go with a block and two points for the evening in a starting role.

GVSU outrebounded FSU 44-34 for the contest and had 14 second chance points to Ferris State's one for the evening.

Grand Valley State's Piper Tucker had 12 points to lead the Lakers with Korynn Hincka and Taylor Parmley each adding 10 points. Janae Langs pulled down a game-high nine boards for the Lakers.

With the win, GVSU improved to 21-6 overall and 16-5 in the GLIAC this year.

Ferris State, which played the season finale with the team's second-leading scorer in redshirt freshman guard Riley Blair due to injury, wraps up the 2016-17 season and the second campaign under head coach Kendra Faustin. The Bulldogs had only a single senior in Nicholson on this year's roster.
