Big Third Quarter Lifts #1 Ashland To Win Over Ferris State In GLIAC Women's Basketball Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - Nationally top-ranked Ashland University used a big third quarter to beat the Ferris State University women's basketball squad 95-69 on Saturday (Dec. 2) evening at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The defending national champion Eagles scored 40 points in the third quarter alone to break open the contest against FSU while improving to 8-0 on the year.

FSU, which entered the game at 6-1 overall, kept the game close in the opening half and trailed by only six points at halftime. The Bulldogs also played AU within a point in the final quarter, but the 40-21 AU edge in the third proved to be a deciding factor.

The Eagles forced 32 FSU turnovers and outscored Ferris State 38-13 in points off turnovers to earn the road decision. They also came up with 13 steals in the game and raced to 27 points on the break along with owning a 38-20 margin in the paint.

Ferris State shot 41% overall and hit three-of-12 (25%) three's along with 22-of-25 (88%) free throws.

Meanwhile, Ashland connected on 35% of its field goals and went seven-of-20 (35%) from long range along with 30-of-35 (85.7%) at the stripe.

Ferris State was led by senior center Rachel McInerney, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs also got 12 points from freshman guard Kelsey Wyman along with 10 points from rookie guard Shaniya Huggins.

The Eagles were paced by Jodi Johnson's game-high 23 points with All-American Laina Snyder adding 22 points. Andi Daugherty chipped in 12 points and Sara Loomis scored 11 for the Eagles.

Overall, Ashland outrebouned FSU 46-40 for the night and pulled down 25 offensive boards in the win.

Ferris State, which is now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC, will hit the road for a four-game stretch. The Bulldogs visit Northwood on Thursday, Dec. 7, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. (ET) in Midland. That will be followed by another league road tilt on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Saginaw Valley State starting at 4 p.m. (ET).
