Ferris State Win Streak Snapped By GVSU In Women's Basketball Action

Allendale, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad had its two-game win streak come to an end on Saturday (Jan. 20) night as the Bulldogs fell in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play to rival Grand Valley State by a 75-57 count inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.

FSU battled the Lakers much of the way and got off to a quick start, but the Lakers responded with impressive first-half shooting from the outside to take a 33-19 halftime edge. It was a one-point game at the end of the first period and FSU managed to keep the second half close, but the second period proved to be the difference.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs started fast and knocked down four early three's of their own to pull back within single digits. However, the Lakers had an answer every time en route to the victory.

Senior guard Leah Humes paced Ferris State with a team-high 14 points while both sophomore guard Riley Blair and junior guard Alexis Bush added 12 points each. The Bulldogs also got eight points off the bench from freshman guard Shaniya Huggins.

Meanwhile, both Jenn DeBoer and Natalie Koenig totaled a game-high 19 points apiece for the Lakers with Maddie Dailey adding 11 points in the GVSU triumph.

The Lakers hit 41% of their field goals and went 12-of-28 (42.9%) from long range along with 14-of-17 (82.4%) at the line. FSU made 36.7% of its tries from the floor and finished by making six-of-16 (37.5%) three's and seven-of-nine (77.8%) free throws.

Grand Valley State outrebounded FSU 43-33 for the night and had 15 offensive boards to 11 for the Bulldogs. They also forced 20 FSU turnovers, but had 18 of their own.

Finally, the Lakers finished with 12 steals and four blocks compared to 10 steals and eight blocks for FSU, which fell to 10-9 overall this year. GVSU improved to 16-3 with the win.

The Bulldogs will return home to host Lake Superior State in league action on Saturday, Jan. 27, inside Jim Wink Arena. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. (ET).
