Ferris State Wraps Up Four-Game Road Stretch With Setback At Northern Michigan

Marquette, Mich. - A late run lifted the Northern Michigan Wildcats to a 69-60 triumph over the Ferris State University women's basketball squad on Saturday (Feb. 17) inside NMU's Berry Events Center.

The Bulldogs and the Wildcats were tied up heading into the final quarter, but NMU outscored FSU 22-13 over the final 10 minutes to pull out the win in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

Northern Michigan held a decided advantage at the free throw stripe as NMU made 25-of-28 (89.3%) free throws, including seven-of-nine (77.8%) in the final quarter, compared to FSU's six-of-16 (37.5%) showing.

Senior guard Leah Humes led Ferris State with a game-high 20 points and had five steals while the Bulldogs also got 14 points from freshman guard Shaniya Huggins in her first career start. Senior center Rachel McInerney added 12 points in the setback.

NMU was paced by Lexi Smith's team-best 17 points with Elizabeth Lutz adding 14 points. The Wildcats' Taylor Hodell chipped in 11 points and Emily Schramek posted 10 points in the game.

The Bulldogs forced 20 turnovers in the game and had only 12 of their own while also notching 10 offensive rebounds to only one for NMU. Overall, the Wildcats held a 32-26 edge on the glass.

From the floor, FSU shot 41% overall and went four-of-17 (23.5%) from three-point range. The Wildcats finished shooting 51.4% overall and made six-of-14 (42.9%) three's.

With the setback, Ferris State fell to 13-13 overall and 7-11 in the GLIAC. NMU improved to 13-13 overall and 9-9 in conference action after heading into the contest only a game in front of the Bulldogs in the league.

Ferris State now sits seventh overall in the league standings heading into the final week of regular-season action with the top eight teams earning conference tournament bids at the end of the year.

FSU returns home to host Purdue Northwest on Thursday (Feb. 22) starting at 7:30 p.m. (ET) before entertaining rival Grand Valley State in the regular-season finale for Senior Day on Saturday (Feb. 24) beginning at 3 p.m. (ET) inside Jim Wink Arena.
