Late Charge Falls Short As Bulldogs Drop Regional Tilt At Lewis

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad battled the Lewis Flyers to the wire in regional action on Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon, but fell short in a 77-72 setback.

The Bulldogs fell behind early 24-15 after the opening period, but fought back and cut the margin down in the final period by outscoring LU 19-15 in the fourth frame.

Ferris State got a team-high 17 points from sophomore guard Shaniya Huggins along with 12 points by senior guard Alexis Bush in the loss. Freshman Jalynn Brumfield added seven points off the bench while four others scored six points each.

FSU shot 39.7% from the floor and went four-of-16 (25%) from three-point range along with six-of-12 (50%) at the line. Meanwhile, the Flyers converted at a 52% clip from the floor and hit five-of-14 (35.7%) three's while owning an advantage at the free throw stripe where they finished 18-of-26 (69.2%) overall.

The frontcourt combination of Rachel Hinders and Jessica Kelliher combined for 46 points for Lewis as Hinders poured in a game-high 24 points and Kelliher totaled 22 points in the win. Tierney Lockett totaled 11 points for LU, which played only eight players in the outing.

Behind Kelliher's game-high 16 rebounds, Lewis owned a 42-33 rebounding margin, but the Bulldogs forced 29 turnovers and came up with 12 steals to keep it close. Bush led the way with four steals in the effort for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State finished with 11 assists and two blocked shots with the Flyers netting 18 assists, six steals and five blocks overall.

FSU fell to 3-2 on the year with the setback to the Flyers, who improved to 5-1 this season.

The Bulldogs will open GLIAC play on the road Thursday (Nov. 29) night with a 5:30 p.m. (ET) tilt against Wayne State in Detroit. FSU then faces Ashland on Saturday afternoon in Ohio.
