Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad battled nationally 10th-ranked Grand Valley State to the wire in a 76-61 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road setback on Thursday (Jan. 3) night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.
The Bulldogs fell behind 26-13 after the opening period, but the contest was virtually even from that point forward as the Lakers could never pull away.
Ferris State, which was playing with the loss of two key players from its regular playing rotation due to injury, forced GVSU into 19 turnovers in the setback while allowed FSU to stay in the game.
The Lakers got a game-high 25 points from standout senior center Cassidy Boensch along with 19 points by Maddie Dailey and 15 from Jenn DeBoer.
Meanwhile, FSU received 15 points each from senior gaurd Alexis Bush and forward Riley Blair as each knocked down six field goal tries in the contest. Kelsey Wyman added nine points off the bench and Adrienne Anderson chipped in eight for FSU.
The Bulldogs shot 38% overall and were only two-of-13 (15.4%) from long range, but managed to make 11-of-15 (73.3%) free throws.
Grand Valley State converted at a 46% clip from the floor and connected on eight-of-24 (33.3%) three's while making 18-of-21 (85.7%) free throws.
THe Lakers owned a 44-29 rebounding edge and finisshed with 20 assists, seven steals and four blocked shots with FSU totaling five assists, 10 steals and a single block. The Bulldogs netted 13 turnovers of their own.
Sophomore guard Shaniya Huggins had three steals and Anderson finished with two for FSU, which dropped to 6-5 overall this season and 3-2 in the GLIAC. GVSU improved to 12-1 on the year with the win while staying unbeaten in conference play.
Ferris State will return home to play its first home game of the 2019 calendar year on Saturday (Jan. 5) as the Bulldogs host the Davenport Panthers for the first-time ever in league action. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. (ET) at Jim Wink Arena.
