Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad earned its third consecutive Saturday overtime victory as a buzzer-beater from freshman forward Chloe Idoni lifted FSU to a 86-85 win against Wayne State on Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon in Detroit.
The Bulldogs led much of the way before Wayne State seized the lead down the stretch and the game went to overtime. FSU had a potential game-winner at the end of regulation from freshman guard Mallory McCartney that bounced away, but the Bulldogs were not to be denied.
After the Warriors took the lead at the free throw line in the closing seconds in overtime, FSU gave the ball to McCartney who drove to the fall. Her layup and a potential tip-in from junior guard Adrienne Anderson both came off the rim, but Idoni was there to get the final shot from inside the lane away for the victory as time expired.
Senior forward Riley Blair led FSU with a game-high 28 points while Anderson added 20 points for the Bulldogs. FSU also got 13 points from Samantha Krauss in her second-straight start while Idoni chipped in with 12 points.
Wayne State was led by Grace George, who finished with 18 points. Sadia Johnson added 17 points with Nastassja Chambers contributing 11 points and Sam Cherney scoring 10 points.
The Bulldogs shot 42% from the field in the game and also went 19-of-21 (90.5%) free throws. Meanwhile, WSU sank 54.2% of its field goals and was 17-of-23 (73.9%) at the line. FSU held a 19-13 margin in points off turnovers and also totaled 11 second-chance points to only seven for Wayne State.
The Bulldogs moved back into a first-place tie atop the GLIAC North Division with the victory and are now 15-6 overall and 9-4 in league action. WSU fell to 12-9 on the year and 6-7 in the GLIAC.
Ferris State returns home to open a four-game homestand against Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Feb. 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. (ET) inside Jim Wink Arena. Five of the Bulldogs' final seven regular-season games remaining are in Big Rapids.
