Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad got a big win to hold onto a share of first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division as FSU pulled out a 67-66 triumph over Northwood on Saturday (Feb. 8) at Jim Wink Arena.
The Bulldogs' win lifted them to 16-7 overall and 10-5 in the GLIAC as FSU remains tied with Parkside at the top of the division following weekend action.
Ferris State built an early 20-11 lead following the opening quarter of play and held a 35-25 edge at halftime before Northwood responded in the third quarter. They outscored FSU 25-13 in the frame and the action went back and forth down the stretch before the Bulldogs found a way to secure the triumph.
The Bulldogs outscored Northwood 18-7 in points off turnovers and limited NU to only 37% shooting in the final quarter while garnering the win.
Senior forward Riley Blair led FSU with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds and four steals with freshman guard Mallory McCartney adding 17 points, eight assists and six boards. FSU also got 14 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and three steals by junior guard Adrienne Anderson.
Overall, FSU shot 44.4% from the floor and made 17-of-20 (85%) free throws while going only two-of-15 (13.3%) behind the three-point arc.
Meanwhile, Northwood shot 41.7% overall and hit eight-of-26 (30.8%) long range tries in addition to eight-of-11 (72.7%) free throws.
The Timberwolves were led by Makenzie Todd, who notched 16 points off the bench and hit four three's in the game. She was joined in double-digits by Ellie Taylor with 12 points as NU fell to 7-16 on the year and 5-10 in the GLIAC.
Northwood slightly outrebounded FSU 35-34 and the Timberwolves also had 10 offensive boards, but FSU forced 16 turnovers and had eight steals in the game to go with 17 assists.
The Bulldogs will host Michigan Tech as their four-game homestand continues on Thursday, Feb. 13, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. (ET) inside Jim Wink Arena.
