Ferris State Battles To Finish In Tight Road Setback At 14th-Ranked GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad battled nationally 14th-ranked rival Grand Valley State to the finish on Thursday (Jan. 13) night, but fell short by a 67-59 count in a battle of the league's leaders at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.

The Lakers took an 18-13 lead after the opening quarter and led by 12 at halftime. However, FSU fought back in the second half and outscored the Lakers 14-9 in the third and cut the lead down inside of five points, but could not pull out the win.

With the triumph, GVSU improved to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC with FSU dropping to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Senior guard Adrienne Anderson paced FSU with 18 points and recorded her 1,000th career point in the contest. FSU also got 17 points from junior Mallory McCartney with sophomore Kadyn Blanchard adding 11 points in the setback.

Ferris State kept the game close by shooting 44.4% from the floor and making 10-of-22 (45.5%) three's, but finished only one-of-eight (12.5%) at the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Grand Valley State shot 43.6% from the field and hit on eight-of-22 (36.4%) three's to go with an 11-of-16 (68.8%) effort at the free throw line.

The Lakers out rebounded FSU 38-29 for the day and had only nine turnovers. GVSU was paced by Emily Spitzley, who had a game-high 22 points with Rylie Bisballe adding 19 points and Ellie Droste scoring 17 points.

Ferris State will square off against another West Michigan rival on Saturday (Jan. 15) as FSU visits Davenport for a 1 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Caledonia.
