Women's Golf Takes 13th Place At The Second Annual Akron Zippy Invitational

The nationally-ranked Ferris State University women's golf team capped off its 2009 fall season with an 11th-place showing at the second annual Akron Zippy Invitational (Oct. 5-6) in Fairlawn, Ohio 

Ferris State registered a three-round 1,001 team score on the Rosemont Country Club course with rounds of 338, 321, and 342, respectively.  The Bulldogs finished 10 stroke in back of Bowling Green State and Detroit Mercy, who both turned in ninth-place tying 991 scores.

Grand Valley State captured the tournament title with a 932-stroke total while Toledo fired a second-place 935 score.  Host Akron carded a 953 to claim fourth place, which was 10 strokes ahead of fourth-place Eastern Kentucky and 21 strokes in front of fifth-place Ohio among the 15 participating teams.

Freshman Ashley Swanson (Flushing/Flint Powers Catholic Central) and sophomore Brooke Rodes (Traverse City/West) paced Ferris State as the two tied for 31st place by producing 248 scores apiece.  Swanson (86-78-84=248) and Rodes (82-81-85=248) tied three others players for 31st-place honors.

Sophomore Blaize Baumgartner (Perry) turned in a 251 score (85-79-87=251) to gain a share of 40th place while fellow sophomore Bryce Hetchler (Clinton Township/Fraser) shot a 54-hole 254 (85-83-86=254) to post a 52nd-place tie. 

Rounding out the scoring for the Bulldogs was sophomore Breezy Bernth (Greenville), who tied for 80th place by accumulating a 277-stroke total (100-86-91=277).

Freshman Amy Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) participated in a non-scoring capacity and earned 83rd place with a 285 score (97-94-94=285).

The Bulldogs entered the tournament ranked 18th nationally in the first Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II Coaches' Poll (Oct. 5).  

Ferris State is now idle until March 28-29 when the Bulldogs return to the links at the Northern Kentucky Invitational in Perry Park, Ky.
