Women's Golf Remains Seventh After Regional Second-Round Play

The Ferris State University women's golf team stayed in seventh place following this Monday's (May 3) second round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Super Regional One at Springfield, Mo.

The ninth-seeded Bulldogs improved by six strokes in second-round action and have compiled a 650 team score (+74) to date after completion of 36 holes.  FSU turned in a 328 score in Sunday's (May 2) opening round in what represented the Bulldogs' ninth consecutive regional tournament appearance.  Ferris State is presently 11 stroke in back of sixth-place Ashland (639, +63) and five stroke in front of eighth-place Northern Kentucky (655, +79).

Grand Valley State continues to lead the nine-team field with a first-place 605 team score (+29) and leads second-place California (Pa.) by eight strokes entering final-round action.

Leading the way are freshman Ashley Swanson (Flushing/Flint Powers Catholic Central) and sophomore Erin Fuchik (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley), who are presently both tied for 19th place.  Swanson (78-79=157, +13) and Fuchik (79-78=157, +13) are among four golfers to earn a share of 19th-place honors.  Swanson's lone birdie of the second round occurred on the par-five seventh hole as she produced six pars for a seven-over par 79.  Fuchik, who had a six-over 78 score, also tallied one birdie in the second round at the number-two par three hole and she followed with three straight pars en route to accumulating seven total for the round.

Sophomore Bryce Hetchler (Clinton Township/Fraser) moved up four places into a three-way tie for 39th place as a result of firing a 168 (87-81=168, +24) on the par 72 Rivercut Golf Course.  Sophomore Blaize Baumgartner (Perry) is one stroke in back of Hetchler with a 169 (85-84=169, +25), which is good for sole possession of 42nd place.

Rounding out the scoring for the Bulldogs is sophomore Brooke Rodes (Traverse City/West), who carded a 177 (86-91=177, +33) to claim 45th place.

The top three teams along with the top three individual golfers not affiliated with a team from each super regional will advance to the 2010 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships, which are slated for May 12-15 at the Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz.

This Tuesday's (May 4) final-round action for Ferris State gets underway at 8:10 a.m. (CDT).  Live statistics are available at http://golfstat.com/
