Ferris State Set To Host GLIAC Women's Golf Championships

Ferris State University will serve as host for the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Championships to be held next weekend (April 24-25) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

The opening two rounds will be held on Saturday (April 24) at the par 72, 5,879-yard Katke Golf Course on the FSU campus, starting at 8:30 a.m. (EDT) on the first and 10th tees.  Continuous play for the 36 holes is scheduled for Saturday's action.  The final round on Sunday (April 25) will also commence at 8:30 a.m. (EDT) with action beginning on the first and 10th tees.

Competing in the conference championships besides Ferris State will be Ashland, Findlay, Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Northwood, and Tiffin.

This season, several of the nation's top NCAA Division II teams will be vying for the GLIAC title with Grand Valley State (second),  and Ashland (16th) ranked among the top 25 teams. Host Ferris State is listed among others receiving votes in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II Coaches' Poll (April 5). 

The Bulldogs last hosted the conference championships in 2004 (April 17-18) and placed second among seven teams with a two-round 652-stroke total (320-332=652, +76).  Grand Valley State claimed the league tournament title after carding a 57-over-par 633 score on Ferris' Katke Golf Course.

The FSU women's golf program has presently won three GLIAC Championships (2001-02, 2005-06, and 2006-07) with the most recent occurring in 2007 (April 20-21) with a first-place 928 (+64) three-round score at the Lake View Country Club in North East, Pa. 

A season ago, Ferris State finished third of six teams at the 2009 GLIAC Championships (April 26-27) in Allendale, Mich.  The Bulldogs accumulated a 645 team score (+69) with rounds of 327 and 318 on Grand Valley State's The Meadows Golf Course.  GVSU would claim top honors with a 39-over-par 615-stroke total.  

This 2009-10 season, the Bulldogs have currently placed among the top 10 in five of their eight tournaments.  Ferris State, which is coached by Mike Mignano, will compete in the Tiffin Lady Dragon Invitational this weekend (April 18-19) at Tiffin, Ohio, prior to the GLIAC Championships.
