Women's Golf Headed To NCAA Tourney

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the 11th consecutive time, Ferris State University will be represented at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Regionals as the Bulldogs earned a postseason berth to the 2012 East Super Regional as announced Monday (April 30) by the NCAA-II Women's Golf Committee.  

FSU will make its 11th straight NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance after making its debut back in the 2001-02 season with a third-place showing. To date, the Bulldogs have won a regional tourney twice (2003-04 and 2006-07) while attaining runner-up honors on four occasions (2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, and 2008-09).

Ferris State is among nine teams who will playing in the 2012 East Super Regional from May 6-8 at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.  The University of Findlay will be hosting the East Super Regional Tournament.

The Bulldogs, who are coached by fifth-year head coach Mike Mignano, are seeded seventh among the East Region teams.  Grand Valley State is the top seed while Indianapolis and Drury (Mo.) are the second and third seeds, respectively. California (Pa.) is fourth and Ashland is seeded fifth.  The remainder of the East Region field is comprised of sixth-seed host Findlay, seventh-seed FSU, number eight seed Missouri-St. Louis along with ninth-seeded Southern Indiana.  Four individuals will also take part.

Last season, Ferris State placed fifth overall in the 2011 NCAA-II Super Regional One Championships (May 21-3) in Belle Vernon, Pa.

Ferris State previously earned second-place honors at the 2009 NCAA-II East Regional as a result of generating a three-round 960-stroke total at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon.  The Bulldogs, who qualified for the national tournament with their runner-up performance in '09, recorded rounds of 320, 321, and 319 to finish 96 strokes over par and second to regional champion Grand Valley State (918, +54).      

Each super regional will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with nine teams and four individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. All participants will compete throughout the 54 holes of competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not affiliated with a team from each super regional, will advance to the national championships.

The 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 16-19, at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky. The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day's total score. The number of participants that qualify for the finals is 72.

Ferris State placed fourth overall at last week's (April 23-24) GLIAC Championships hosted by Northwood University at Currie Golf Course in Midland, Mich.  The Bulldogs finished with a three-round total of 984 strokes.
