Bulldog Women's Golf Finishes Third At GLIAC Championships
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team entered the final day of action as the leader in the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, but finished third overall after the final 18 holes of action on Sunday (April 28) in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Bulldogs held a three-stroke lead over rival Grand Valley State after the initial 36 holes of the 54-hole league event, but could not duplicate its impressive second-round effort as the Bulldogs finished behind champion GVSU and runner-up Ashland.
Grand Valley State carded an impressive 314 score in Sunday's final round at Stone Ridge Golf Club to finish at 943 (+79) for the tournament. Ashland registered a 953 total (+89) and was only two shots ahead of FSU, which netted a 955 (+91) total over the three rounds.
The Bulldogs had carded a 321 on Friday before posting the lowest overall round of the tournament with a 305 figure on Saturday to open the final day as the leader in the tournmaent. However, FSU recorded a 329 total on Sunday in the final 18 holes of competition.
Individually, the Bulldogs' Jacqueline DeBoer finished fourth overall for the Bulldogs as she posted a 234 total on rounds of 77, 76 and 81 on Sunday. GVSU's Kelly Hartigan held on to her individual lead and came away as the individual winner with a 221 effort.
FSU's Ashley Swanson and Cooper Shawen also placed among the top 10 finishers for Ferris State. Swanson placed seventh with a 237 total on rounds of 81 Friday followed by back-to-back 78 scores over the last two days. Meanwhile, Shawen came in 10th with a 242 figure. She fired an 82 Friday before posting a 77 on Saturday and a 83 on the final day.
Next up for Ferris State was Libby Berens, who tied for 13th overall at 247 on rounds of 81, 79 and 87 on Sunday.
Finally, Emily Rohdy placed 16th overall for the Bulldogs at 248 with scores of 86, 74 and 88 over the three days, respectively.
The GLIAC Championships were hosted by Tiffin University on the par 72 course measuring 5,919 yards at Stone Ridge Golf Club. Ashland, Ferris State, Findlay, Grand Valley State, Lake Erie, Lake Superior State, Malone, Northwood, Ohio Dominican, Tiffin and Walsh also competed in the GLIAC Championships.
The Bulldogs were ranked seventh in the latest (April 25) NCAA Division II East Regional Rankings and will await the official NCAA Tournament selection announcement early this week.
