Women's Golf Remains Eighth After Day Two At NCAA East Regional
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team finished three strokes better on day two of the 2013 NCAA East Regional Championships on Monday (May 6), but remains in eighth place overall heading into the third and final round of the tournament at Joliet, Ill.
FSU posted a 336 on Monday following a 339 team score in the opening 18 holes of action on Sunday at the Joliet Country Club. Action wraps up in the 54-hole tournament on Tuesday (May 7) with the final round on the par 72 course.
Indianapolis continues to lead the field after posting the top score on day two with a 315 total. The Greyhounds are currently at 618 after 36 holes and own a commanding lead over California (Pa.), which is second at 643 overall. Ashland presently ranks third (646) followed by Findlay (649) and Missouri-St. Louis (654) in the top five. Grand Valley State is sixth (663) with Drury (Mo.) in seventh place (667), FSU eighth and Southern Indiana ninth (691) heading into the final day.
FSU was led on the second day by Libby Berens, who carded a 77 after an opening round of 86 and is tied for 19th individually at 163 for the tournament. She is four strokes ahead of teammate Ashley Swanson's 167 total, which is tied for 26th. Swanson came back with an 81 on Monday following an 86 on Sunday.
The Bulldogs' Jacqueline DeBoer also recorded an 81 on Monday and moved into a share of 29th place at 168. She initially fired an 87 on Sunday in the opening round.
After DeBoer is Cooper Shawen, who's 48th in the field with a 180 total on rounds of 83 and 97 over the two days, respectively. Finally, Emily Rohdy is 49th as she did not receive a score on Monday following an 84 in the first 18 holes.
Lewis University is hosting the East Super Regional Tournament on the women's side with the participating teams playing a single round each day for a total of 54 holes. The final round takes place on Tuesday (May 7).
Each women's golf super regional consists of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with nine teams and four individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not affiliated with a team from each super regional, will advance to the national championships. The 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 15-18, at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Ferris State is guided by sixth-year head coach Mike Mignano and making its 12th consecutive national tournament appearance.
