Ferris State Women's Golf Earns Runner-Up Honors In Home Invitational

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team wrapped up its fall campaign by moving into second place to claim runner-up honors at its own Ferris State Invitational on Sunday (Oct. 13) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs, who were fourth overall following Saturday's opening round of action, carded a 307 team score to finish 10 strokes behind champion Grand Valley State.  FSU posted a two-round, 617 total while the Lakers shot 607 overall in winning the 13-team field.

The runner-up finish marked the fourth consecutive tournament this fall in which the Bulldogs have claimed either first or second place honors.

Senior Ashley Swanson led the Bulldogs in her final home event as she posted rounds of 78 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday to finish tied for fifth overall with a 153 total on the par 72 course.

Behind Swanson was Elizabeth Bauernfeind, who recorded a 155 figure on rounds of 79 and 76 over the two days to place tied for ninth in the field.

Ferris State had five golfers among the top 15 overall as Libby Berens along with seniors Jacqueline (DeBoer) Mulder and Emily Rohdy all tied for 14th individually with 157 scores.  Berens shot a 77 on Sunday after an opening-round 80 total while Mulder fired a 79 in her final 18 holes of action to go with a 78 on Saturday.  Meanwhile, Rohdy had an 82 in the final round after totaling a 75 in round one.

As part of the home tournament, the Bulldogs also had several student-athletes compete as individuals in the tournament.

FSU's Jordan Duvall tied for 26th overall with a 165 score on rounds of 82 and 83 while Claire Jansa came in tied for 38th with a 170 total on scores of 87 and 83 over the two days, respectively.

Kelsey McKinley shot a 171 score on rounds of 87 and 84 to tie for 42nd in the field, Kathleen Koomen totaled a 172 score in placing tied for 44th with scores of 88 and 84 and Olivia Pizii was 64th overall at 181 on socres of 92 and 89.

Finally, Taylor Gould finished 83rd in the field at 209 as she shot a 103 and 106 score.

Behind GVSU and Ferris State in the team race was Ashland, which finished third at 624 overall.  Findlay came in fourth (627) with Northwood fifth (648) in the team standings.

A total of 86 golfers competed in the event with GVSU's Kelly Hartigan claiming individual medalist honors with an even-par, 144 figure over the 36 holes on rounds of 73 and 71.  She was seven strokes in front of Findlay's Michele Schambs, who posted a 151.

The Bulldogs will resume their quest for a 13th consecutive national tournament appearance next spring.  FSU has reached the NCAA Tournament 12 consecutive years to date.  The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's golf championships will also take place during the spring season.
