Ferris State Women's Golf Earns Runner-Up Honors At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team climbed the leaderboard to earn runner-up honors on the final day of the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, which wrapped up on Sunday (April 27) at the Winding Hollow Golf Club in New Albany, Ohio.

The Bulldogs tallied their best figure of the three-round event with a 317 team score on Sunday to finish at 976 overall. FSU shot a 336 in the first round and was in third place heading into the finla 18 holes of action after carding a 323 team score in round two.

Grand Valley State emerged as the tournament champion in the 54-hole event by shooting a 943 team figure. With Ferris State's performance on Sunday, the Bulldogs moved past Ashland, which placed third overall at 979 for the tournament. A total of 10 league schools took part in the event hosted by Ohio Dominican University.

Individually, the Bulldogs were led by Kelsey McKinley, who finished fifth on the leaderboard. She carded a 78 on the final day after shooting rounds of 82 on Friday and 77 on Saturday to finish at 237 overall.

McKinley was followed by senior Ashley Swanson in sixth place at 238 for the three-day event. She followed up her scores of 81 and 79 the first two days with a 78 in the final round.

Senior Jacqueline Mulder also placed in the top 10 overall for the Bulldogs by tying for eighth place in the field. She fired her best round of the tournament with a 79 on Sunday to record a 242 figure for the tournament. Mulder shot an 81 in round one before posting an 82 in the second round.

FSU's Libby Berens tied for 25th overall at 263, but also carded her best round on Sunday with an 82 on the day after initially posting a 96 in the first round followed by a 85 in round two.

Finally, senior Emily Rohdy tied for 31st at 271 and also posted per best performance Sunday with a 89 on the par 72 course. She totaled a 92 in the opening round and a 90 in the second round before finishing the event on Sunday.

The individual champion was Grand Valley State's Kelly Hartigan, who shot a 227 overall on rounds of 77, 77 and 73 in the 54 holes of action.

The Bulldogs' runner-up finish represented their best performance at the GLIAC Championships since finishing second overall in 2008.

Official participants for the NCAA Division II Championships will be announced via ncaa.com early this week with the NCAA-II East Regional set for May 4-6 in Indianapolis, Ind.
