Ferris State Takes Over Sole Possession Of Third Place After Two Rounds In NCAA Women's Golf Regional

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team held onto third place overall and bettered their team score by six strokes following round two of the NCAA Division II East Regional Championships on Monday (May 5) at the Purgatory Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Bulldogs carded a 313 figure in Monday's second 18 holes of action are are presently a single stroke ahead of fourth place Findlay heading into the final round on Tuesday (May 6). The top three teams at the end of Tuesday's round will earn a berth into the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Ferris State entered Monday's second of three rounds tied with Findlay as both teams fired 319 scores on Sunday in the opening round of the 54-hole event. FSU got off to a strong start in Monday's competition to surge past Findlay and claimed sole possession of third place as the Oilers shot a 314 figure.

First day leader Grand Valley State continues to lead the pack with a 613 total after two rounds with host Indianapolis in second place at 621 overall. FSU holds a two-day 632 total with Findlay right behind at 633 for the tournament. A total of 10 teams are competing in the super regional event.

Bulldog senior Jacqueline Mulder had a big day for the Bulldogs as she climbed into a share of sixth place overall by recording an even-par score of 72 on the day.  It came on the heels of her opening round 82 recorded on Sunday as she now has a two-day total of 154 for the tournament. Her even-par 72 tied for the best round of the day on Monday.

Sophomore Libby Berens and senior Ashley Swanson are both also among the top 15 performers in the regional as they share 11th place overall heading into the final round. Swanson carded an 80 on Monday after totaling a 77 in round one while Berens followed up her opening round score of 79 by shooting a 78 in round two. Both have totaled 157 thru two rounds each.

The Bulldogs' Elizabeth Bauernfeind shot an 84 on Monday and is tied for 33rd overall with a 165 total. She previously recorded an 81 in round one.

Finally, senior Emily Rohdy posted an 83 for the second-straight day and is now tied for 36th overall with a 166 figure after two rounds.

Each women's golf super regional at the Division II level consists of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with nine teams and four individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not affiliated with a team from each super regional, will advance to the national championships. The 
2014 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 14-17, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C.

Ferris State, which is making its 13th consecutive Division II Tournament appearance this spring, must finish in the top three overall following Tuesday's final round to advance to the national championships for the first time since 2009. FSU entered the event as the region's number three overall seed behind GVSU and Indy.

Final round tee times are set for Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m. (ET) in Indianapolis.
