Ferris State's Destiny Lawson Tied For 7th After Round One At NCAA East Super Regional Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - Sophomore Destiny Lawson (Ocala, Fla.) of the Ferris State University women's golf team had a strong first day showing in the 2017 NCAA Division II East Super Regional Championships, which began with first-round play Monday (May 8) in Canton, Ohio.

Lawson, who's among six individuals from across the region taking part in the regional championships in addition to 12 teams at the Glenmoor Country Club, shot a two-over par 74 in round one and is currently tied for 7th place following the opening 18 holes of action in the tournament. She's only four shots off the lead follwoing one round.

The tournament, which is being hosted by Walsh University, runs thru Wednesday (May 10) with each competitor playing 18 holes per day.

Each super regional consists of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with 12 teams and 6 individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site. All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to the national championships, which take place May 17-20 at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. 

An All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Second Team choice this season, Lawson is the only individual golfer outside of a team from a GLIAC member institution chosen to compete in the NCAA Championships. She's the first Bulldog female to compete in the NCAA Super Regional since FSU qualified as a team in 2014.

This year, Lawson paced the Bulldogs as she finished ninth overall in the individual field at the 2017 GLIAC Championships held April 21-23 in Nashport, Ohio. She carded a 238 score for the 54-hole tournament. After shooting a 74 in round one on Friday and an 83 in the second round on Saturday, she closed the weekend with an 81 in the field round.

This season, Lawson placed among the top 15 golfers in seven of her eight outings during the year. She posted five top 10 finishes, including a season-best fifth place performance in the season-opening Northern Michigan Invitational. She ranked among the squad's leaders in nearly every event she competed in this campaign.

Action continues with day two play on Tuesday (May 9) at the regional championships.
