Ferris State Women's Golf Wins SVSU Fall Invitational As Lawson Earns Medalist Honors

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team opened the 2019-20 season in a big way as the Bulldogs took first place in the Saginaw Valley State Fall Invitational held on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 14-15) at the Saginaw Valley Public Golf Course near Bay City.

The Bulldogs, who were in third place after day one action on Saturday, shot a 298 team figure over the final 18 holes and finished at 610 for the 36-holes. FSU finished six strokes ahead of runner-up Lake Superior State, which carded a 616 total.

Ferris State's Destiny Lawson emerged as the individual medalist as she shot a 150 total on rounds of 76 Saturday and 74 on Sunday. She tied for first overall with Hannah Meloche of Davenport, but birdied the first playoff hole to garner the win.

FSU's Shayna Schneider also placed in the top five as she shared fifth place with a 153 figure. She shot a 82 in round one followed by a 71 in final round action.

The Bulldogs' Mackenzie Dale carded a 154 and finished tied for eighth overall. After shooting a 78 in the opening round, she notched a 76 over the final 18 holes of action.

FSU's Karina Vanduinen came in tied for 13th as she tallied a score of 155 with rounds of 78 and 77 while Margo Brown wound up tied for 25th place at 159. She posted a 80 in first-round action followed by a 79 in the final round.

Both Lawson and Schneider were named to the all-tournament team for the Bulldogs. A total of nine teams were in the field.

The Bulldogs also had two competitors take part as individuals with Mari Suokko coming in tied for eighth place (154) and Abby Grevel placing tied for 39th. Suokko shot rounds of 82 and 72 with Grevel carding an 86 and an 81.

Ferris State will next take part in the Cumberland Classic set for Sept. 21-22 in Pataskala, Ohio.
