Women's Golf Earns Runner-Up Honors At Cumberland Classic On School-Record Effort

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf squad had another strong performance on the weekend as the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors in the Cumberland Trail Golf Classic in Pataskala, Ohio.

Ferris State opened action in the 16-team event by matching a school record with a round of 296 on Saturday and closed with a 308 on Sunday to finish at 604 or +28 on the weekend in the 36-hole tournament. The 604 team score represents the lowest figure for a 36-hole event in school history.

The Bulldogs finished only two shots behind team champion Tiffin, which carded a 602 figure.

FSU was led by senior standout Destiny Lawson, who earned runner-up honors individually with a 142 total. She shot an even-par 72 in round one and came back with a two-under 70 on Sunday. Her 142 total also set an individual 36-hole record, topping the previous all-time best score of 144 set by Jacqueline Benscoter in 2007-08.

Along with Lawson, senior Shayna Schneider finished in the top 10 for the Bulldogs as she shared 10th place with a 143 score. She also shot a 72 in round one and closed with an 81 over the final 18 holes.

The Bulldogs' Margo Brown carded a 155 figure over the 36 holes and finished tied for 19th in the field. She shot a 76 in round one and a 79 in the final round.

Meanwhile, freshman Karina Vanduinen placed tied for 33rd with a 159 on rounds of 76 and 83 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Finally, Mackenzie Dale came in tied for 40th at 161 for the weekend as she shot a 83 in the first round and a 78 in round two.

The Bulldogs were joined in the field by schools from across the region with representation from the states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Ferris State returns home to Katke Golf Course and will host the Bulldog Women's Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29, in Big Rapids.
