Women's Soccer Ties Ashland 1-1 In Double Overtime

The Ferris State University women's soccer team snapped its five-match losing skid as the Bulldogs played Ashland to a 1-1 double overtime tie Friday (Oct. 9) afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

Ferris State, which is now 1-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the conference, accounted for the contest's first score as the Bulldog found the back of the Eagles' net at 12:47 into the opening half.  Freshman midfielder Hillary Procunier (Davison/Flint Kearsley) put a shot toward the Ashland goal which hit off the crossbar and out to sophomore forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa), who put the ball into the near side of the Eagles' net off the rebound.  The goal by Borgman was her team-leading eighth of the season while Procunier recorded her first collegiate point with an assist.

The Bulldogs would continue to maintain their one-goal lead until the 73rd minute of the match when Kelly Usher converted on an awarded penalty kick for Ashland to tie the match all up at 1-1.  Usher's game-tying tally occured on a shot which eluded the reach of senior goalkeeper Kari Alsager (Mount Pleasant) and went into the far left side of the FSU goal for the equalizer. 

Ferris State had a number of opportunties to regain the advantage but couldn't convert in regulation nor the two enusing 10-minute overtime periods.  The Bulldogs concluded the match with a 35-9 lead in shots, which included a 14-2 first-half advantage proceeded by a 16-4 lead in the final 45 minutes of regulation.

FSU also recorded eight corner kicks in the contest while Ashland compiled one.

Kari Alsager (0-0-1) , who earned the starting nod for the first time this season, played the entire 110 minutes and saved eight shots while allowing the one Eagles' goal.  Junior midfielder Kara Lovelace (East Kentwood) led Ferris State with three shots on goal as the Bulldogs compiled 13 total as a team.  Goalkeeper Krista Herbst stopped 12 FSU shots for Ashland in a complete-match performance.

The double overtime match marked the second one for Ferris State this season as the Bulldogs played Lewis (Ill.) to a 2-2 tie in two overtimes earlier this season (Sept. 1) at Big Rapids. 

Ferris State travels to Michigan's Upper Peninsula this Sunday (Oct. 11) for a conference match against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.  A 12 p.m. (EDT) start time is slated for the contest at the NMU Soccer Field in Marquette, Mich.
