FSU Soccer Posts Win In Return To Home Field

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team worked the home field to its advantage as the Bulldogs recorded a 2-0 victory over Findlay on Friday (Oct. 21).

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids was the Bulldogs' first home encounter in more than a month since a Sept. 18 matchup against Michigan Tech. FSU had played eight consecutive matches on the road heading into Friday's tilt against the Oilers.

The Bulldogs used the home field to post a decisive 22-11 edge in total shots and had 10 shots on goal to only five for the Oilers.

Ferris State jumped out early as the Bulldogs scored at 24:57 of the first half on the second goal of the year for freshman midfielder Hillary Braun.  She headed in the shot off a corner kick from senior defender Mekyla Spraggins.

The Bulldogs added another goal at 58:09 when senior forward Bri Borgman recorded her team-leading ninth goal fo the campaign on a shot from the middle off an assist by freshman midfielder Stephanie Garland.

Garland paced the Bulldogs with five shots on the afternoon, including four on goal.  Both Borgman and Braun also registered four shots apiece for Ferris State.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel McCollum picked up the victory in net for FSU as she made five saves in going the distance.  Findlay's Alicia Tutino played the entire 90 minutes as well and finished with eight saves for the Oilers.

Ferris State tallied nine shots in the initial half and peppered the Oilers with 13 over the final 45 minutes.

The contest was played under cold and muddy conditions at the FSU Soccer Field and featured 18 combined fouls with 10 being called on Ferris State and eight against Findlay.  Three yellow cards were also issued in the outing.

Overall, Ferris State also received six corner kick tries compared to only two for Findlay.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-7-2 overall and 7-4-2 in conference action with the victory.  UF dropped to 6-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the GLIAC.

Ferris State will host the Tiffin Dragons on Sunday, Oct. 23, in a 12 p.m. (ET) league home match at the FSU Soccer Field.
